Thumbsuckers

I don't know how it has happened, but all of my children are thumbsuckers.  I promise that I don't force their thumbs in their mouth.  It just happens.  With each one, I have given them a pacifier at first thinking maybe they will like it...none of them ever do.  I always figure it will be easier to take a pacifier away since you can't take their thumbs away.  They just spit them out and put their thumbs in their mouth instead.  Some of them even had their thumbs in their mouth in their ultrasound photos.  I was a thumbsucker for WAY too long.  We laugh and say it must run in the genes.
Cooper at 18 months sucking his thumb at the zoo.
Kindle with Daddy on Christmas day sucking her thumb at 9 months.
Grant at 11 weeks sucking his thumb in his bouncy seat.
Celeste at 8 days old sucking her thumb at Nana's birthday party.
Gunnar at 10 weeks sucking his thumb & cuddling with me.
I am thankful that they like their thumbs.  Here are some reasons why:

1.  It is always there.
2.  You can't ever drop or lose it like a pacifier.
3.  They can put it in their own mouth.
4.  They self soothe at night and during naptimes.
5.  There is no nipple confusion with breastfeeding.
6.  I think it is super cute to see babies sucking their thumbs :)

Funny Story About Thumbsucking

When Celeste was born, the midwife put her on my tummy.  The first thing she did was pee on me and then put her thumb in her mouth.  We just laughed.  I knew I had another thumbsucker on my hands.

Are your children thumbsuckers?  Do they prefer a pacifier, their fingers or nothing at all?

  1. What a beautiful family! These pics are so precious. I have 6 children. #1 did not suck his thumb and had the hardest time settling down for naps. #s 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 all found their thumbs really early and could always soothe themselves. #6 will be 3 next month and still sucks her thumb when she's tired. I breastfed all of them. :)

I love your blog! Found you through the Picket Fence blog list. I'm now your newest follower. I'd be honored if you'd come follow me too. :)
